What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format used by iPhones and iPads since iOS 11. It uses the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard to store photos at roughly half the file size of a traditional JPG, while maintaining the same — or better — image quality.
Apple adopted HEIC to help you store more photos on your device without sacrificing detail. A typical iPhone photo in HEIC might be 2–3 MB, while the same shot in JPG could be 5–6 MB.

Why convert HEIC to JPG?

Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select "Most Compatible." This switches your iPhone to JPG by default. Note that this will use more storage space per photo.
